Arthur Patrick Doran and family

Along the way we have done quite a lot of research on the Doran name that didn't pan out to be our ancestors, or that we researched on request. In this case, the Genealogy Sisters received a to research Arthur Patrick Doran, (1884-1914) who had lived in Belfast, Northern Ireland during the same time period as our grandfather.

The male descendants of the Arthur Patrick Doran family have not (yet) taken a Y-DNA test at My Family TreeDNA so we don't know exactly where in the tree the Doran YDNA  match occurs. However, one of his descendants has taken an Ancestry autosomal DNA test. He doesn't match the Genealogy Sisters on that test, but he does match with the descendants of the same Doran line whose emigrant ancestor left Belfast Northern Ireland in the 1700s!

Disclaimer, we are not professional genealogists and don't pretend to be. So when we conduct research for someone, we do not charge for it. And we will only do it if the subject is of interest to us. That's what you do when it's a hobby, not a career.  If you need professional genealogy work done we suggest you contact a local genealogical society to ask them for references.
 Arthur Patrick Doran (1884-1914)
Arthur was the son of Patrick Doran and his wife Mary "Minnie" O'Hagan. We've learned a lot about  Arthur and his family from another researcher, but as she prefers to retain the rights to her very documented research, we are only including here the information about this family that we have learned directly from his descendant and/or from our own research.

Arthur Patrick Doran was born in June of 1884 in Belfast, Ireland. Arthur Patrick unfortunately died Aug 27, 1914 in France. Arthur Patrick Doran was the first casualty of World War I who was from West Belfast. Many more met the same fate during that awful war.

Following are excerpts from the information provided to us by Arthur Patrick Doran's grandson supplemented by information found through other sources.

Arthur Patrick Doran married Sarah Hermon on September 12, 1909 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. (Registration number   M/1909/B1/450/1/34)  Their only child, Arthur James Doran was born April 2, 1911 - the same day that he is enumerated in the 1911 Ireland Census, living with his mother at 278 Cupar St (Shankhill area), Belfast, along with 5 relatives of the Hermon family. The young family moved to 12 Merkland St. Belfast which is the address provided on Arthur Patrick Doran's Last Will & Testament.

Arthur Patrick Doran joined the 2nd Royal Irish Rifles and was a Corporal in the Regulars. He was dispatched with the British Expeditionary Force to France shortly after the outbreak of war to try and help the French stop the Germans who had invaded Belgium and were on their way into France. The BEF landed in France Aug 14th, marched to Mons in Belgium and engaged the enemy then made an orderly retreat slowing them down. He died at the Battle of Le Cateau August 27, 1914 - a very important battle:

"The Battle of Le Cateau was certainly that in which British troops were most heavily outnumbered by the enemy on the Western Front up to the time of the German offensive of 1918. It can scarcely be doubted that it was of great importance in checking the German plan of campaign...It is pretty clear that the German First Army missed, late in the afternoon, such a chance of winning a great victory as seldom occurred in the Western Theatre of WW 1."

Arthur Patrick Doran is buried in Caudry Old Communal Cemetery in France. Caudry is a town about 13 kilometres east of Cambrai on the south side of the main road (D643) to Le Cateau. The cemetery is located in town. For anyone searching for the burial site of the war dead, go to CWGC Commonwealth War Graves Commission at http://www.cwgc.org/. This certificate for Arthur Patrick Doran was obtained free of charge from that web site.

Arthur James Doran (1911-1968)
After his father's death, Arthur James Doran lived with his mother Sarah Hermon Doran and his maternal grandmother Mary Hermon in Belfast, Ireland. In 1920. Mary Hermon decided to move to Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. She took her grandson with her. His mother remained in Belfast. Mary Hermon raised "wee Arty." He continued to live with her for next 10 years (at which point he would have been around 19 years old).

Artie's mother Sarah Hermon Doran, eventually left Ireland emigrating to Toronto where she found work. She married Charles Gates. "Grannie Gates," as she was known by her grandchildren, died in 1970 in Toronto. Though her Doran grandchildren didn't get to see a lot of her growing up, they remember her as a "real character" and loved her very much.

Arthur James Doran died in 1968. Unfortunately neither he nor Grannie Gates talked much about the Doran family. Most likely he didn't know very much about them. Arthur Patrick Doran had become estranged from his Roman Catholic parents when he married a Protestant against their objections.  In a letter written by "Grannie Gates" (Sarah Hermon Doran Gates), she mentioned that Arty's Uncle James (Jim) Doran had emigrated to Australia (we have found no record of this, but he did emigrate to the US). One of Sarah Hermon's brothers emigrated to Australia and the rest of the Hermon family appear to have remained in Belfast.

Some preliminary research has indicated that while some of Arty's Doran uncles and aunts remained in Belfast, a few others emigrated to the Chicago area. Arthur James's son did not know about these relatives until we came across them in our research.  We then heard from another researcher, who knew the family in Belfast, and was very helpful in providing our "cousin" with more information about his relatives. As noted above, we will not be able to share what she told us, only what we found out about them through our research.

Perhaps we should start as far back as we can get.

Patrick James Doran and his wife Isabella (surname unknown).
Patrick James Doran was born about 1824 (source 1901 census) in County Down, Northern Ireland. He died 23 May 1904 in Belfast.  We don't know who his or her parents were. As he is the oldest of his siblings (as far as we could discover) perhaps his father was also a Patrick Doran.

Patrick James's occupation throughout his life was Tailor (noted in his son Patrick's marriage record), and his work was in Belfast, which made it somewhat easy to find him in the Belfast directories. In the 1847  Directory of Belfast, we find him listed under Tailors, his address is given as 25 Bridge Street, upper.  Interestingly. there is also a John Doran listed under Tailors with an address of 65 Augier Street.

In the Directories of 1853, 1855, 1856, 1858 Patrick James Doran's address continues to be 8 Corn Market. John Doran was also listed in those directories at 65 Augier Street. In the 31 March 1901 Census of Ireland, Patrick James Doran is living at Raholp, County Down with his wife Isabella. His occupation is Retired Tailor.  His wife Isabella (born about 1827) died on 28 July 1902 in Ballysugah, Downpatrick, County Down. Patrick James Doran died two years later in Belfast on 23 May 1904.

Patrick Doran and Mary Elizabeth "Minnie" O'Hagan.

Patrick Doran was born about 1856 in Downpatrick, County Down to Patrick James Doran
Patrick Doran and Mary Elizabeth "Minnie" O'Hagan, were married on May 6, 1880. Patrick Doran's occupation was Teacher. He lived at 48 Mille St., Belfast.  and Mary O'Hagan was 19 and lived at 72 Raglan St. Her parents as listed in the transcribed record were Henry and Margaret (sic) Ohagan. Margaret was her sister. Another interesting coincidence is that a member of the Ohagan family was a witness at one of our own Doran family weddings in Belfast around that time.

Mary O'Hagan's birthplace, as noted in the 1901 census of ireland, was Tandragee, County Armagh. So we think this could be the right birth record. Tandragee is a village in the parish of Ballymore, County Armagh. When Arthur Patrick Doran was born in 1884 the witness was Sarah OHagan.
