On 13 June 1859 John Barnes married Mary Ann Ryan at the Kilcolman Roman Catholic Church, Sharavogue, near the town of Birr, County Kings. (Record received from Fr. Kiernan Blake, Kilcolman R.C, Church, Sharavogue, Birr, Co. Offaly, Ireland 057 9120812, June 2008)
Mary Ann Ryan had been baptized on 15 July 1841 in Kings County, Ireland and her parents were listed as Jamy and Johanna Ryan from the parish of Kilcolman, Kings County, Ireland.
John and Mary Ann (Ryan) Barnes had thirteen children, twelve of which lived to adulthood: Maria, Patrick, Margaret, another Margaret, James, John, Johanna, Anna, Hannah, Daniel, Jeremiah, Ellen “Helen”, and Thomas. John Barnes died April 16, 1892 in Dromakeenan. His age at his last Birthday was 60. It was noted that John was married at the time of his death, and that farming was his occupation. The certified cause of his death was apoplexy (stroke) and the duration of Illness was described as "sudden". The coroner's report was registered on April 19, 1892.

John's widow Mary Ann (Ryan) Barnes outlived him by 12 years dying on July 14, 1904 at Ahadouglas. Her declared age at her last birthday was 63 years 7. The death certificate noted that she was a Farmer's widow. The cause was a weak heart, complicated by bronchitis, which had lasted 18 Days. The informant, who had been present at the time of her death was their son, Jeremiah Barnes of Ahadouglas. The death was registered on August 26, 1904.
